What is excavationin construction?

Excavation in construction is the removal of soil or rock to reach the lines, grades, and elevations shown on the drawings, whether for a building pad, foundations, or buried utilities. Estimators break it into three types because each digs at a different production rate and price: mass excavation (large open cuts), structural excavation (footings, pits, and elevator shafts), and trench excavation (utility runs). It is measured in bank cubic yards, the volume of soil in its undisturbed, in-place state.

Excavation, explained.

Excavation is the umbrella scope for digging on a project, and the drawings split it across several documents. The civil C-sheets show site cuts on the grading plan, the structural foundation plan and sections set footing depths, the utility plans set trench inverts, and the geotech report tells you what you are digging in (and where rock or groundwater starts). The sitework contractor typically owns mass excavation and utilities, while structural excavation is sometimes carried by the concrete sub, which is exactly where scope gaps appear at buyout. The mistake new estimators make is pricing every cubic yard the same: an excavator pulling an open cut might move ten times the volume per hour it can dig out of a confined footing pit, so a blended unit cost understates the structural work badly. The second mistake is ignoring the geotech report; an estimate that assumed common earth dies quickly when the borings showed rock at 6 ft. Read the borings before you price the dig.

How it is measured

Excavation is taken off in cubic yards measured in the bank, meaning the in-place volume before digging fluffs it up (a bank cy of common earth can swell roughly 25 percent into loose cy on the truck). Quantities come from the grading plan for open cuts, the foundation sections for structural digs (neat footing dimensions plus working room and any sloped sides), and the utility profiles for trench depth. Cost drivers are soil type from the geotech borings, depth, equipment access, dewatering, protective systems on anything 5 ft or deeper, and what happens to the dirt: cast aside, stockpiled, or hauled off. Hauling is where swell bites, because trucks are sized by loose volume.

What is the difference between excavation and grading?+

Excavation removes soil to reach a required depth or elevation, and it is priced by volume in bank cubic yards. Grading shapes what remains to the design elevations and slopes on the grading plan, and it is usually priced by area. On most sites they run together: the excavator makes the bulk cut, then dozers and graders trim the surface to grade. Estimators carry them as separate line items because the units, equipment, and production rates differ.

Why is excavation measured in bank cubic yards instead of truck volume?+

Because soil expands when you dig it. A bank cubic yard, the undisturbed in-place volume, swells into roughly 1.25 loose cubic yards for common earth once excavated (the exact factor depends on the soil). The drawings define the in-place volume to be removed, so the pay quantity is bank measure, while trucking gets sized off the swelled loose volume. Mixing the two states is one of the most common earthwork estimating errors.

When does an excavation require shoring or a trench box?+

Under OSHA's excavation standard, a trench 5 ft deep or more requires a protective system such as sloping, shoring, or a trench box, unless the cut is entirely in stable rock. Trenches 4 ft or deeper also need a ladder, ramp, or other egress within 25 ft of workers. Estimators should carry protection costs on any deep dig, because a competent person on site, not the bid, makes the final call.
