What is shoringin construction?

Shoring in construction is a temporary support system that holds back the sides of an excavation or supports an existing structure so crews can work safely below grade. In trench work, OSHA requires a protective system (shoring, shielding, or sloping) in any trench 5 ft deep or more, unless the cut is made entirely in stable rock. Shoring actively supports the ground, which separates it from a trench box, which only shields the workers inside it.

Shoring, explained.

Shoring is a temporary structure that supports the sides of an excavation, or an existing building, while permanent work happens below. In trench and excavation work it covers hydraulic vertical shores, screw jacks and timber, sheet piles, and soldier pile and lagging walls. On the documents it is mostly invisible: civil C-sheets and the earthwork specs typically call excavation support a means and methods item designed by the contractor, while the geotech report supplies the soil classification and groundwater data that the design depends on. Deep or engineered systems are delegated design, stamped by the shoring sub's engineer, and OSHA requires any trench protective system deeper than 20 ft to be designed by a registered professional engineer. The scope usually sits with the excavation contractor or a specialty shoring sub. New estimators get two things wrong. They confuse shoring with shielding: a trench box shields the workers inside it but does not support the cut, while shoring actually resists ground movement. And they assume sloping is free, when laying the walls back can add hundreds of cy of extra excavation and backfill, which is exactly the comparison a shoring price has to beat.

How it is measured

Engineered shoring is measured in sf of shored wall face (length of wall x sheet or pile length, including embedment below subgrade), plus mobilization for the drive rig. Hydraulic shores and trench jacks are rented per set per day, with labor to set and pull as the trench advances. Cost drivers come straight from the geotech report: depth of cut, OSHA soil type (A, B, or C), groundwater (which adds dewatering), and what sits next to the excavation, since a street or building beside the cut rules out sloping. There is rarely a shoring quantity printed on the drawings; the estimator builds it from excavation depths on the civil and structural sheets and the boring logs, then decides shore, shield, or slope for each cut.

What is the difference between shoring and shielding in excavation work?+

Shoring supports the excavation walls and resists ground movement; hydraulic shores, sheet piles, and soldier pile and lagging are shoring. Shielding protects the workers inside it without supporting the cut; a trench box is a shield. Both satisfy OSHA's protective system requirement, but they are not interchangeable: next to a structure or roadway where ground movement itself is the problem, you shore, because a shield would let the ground settle around it.

When does OSHA require shoring or another protective system in a trench?+

At 5 ft of depth and beyond, every trench needs a protective system, shoring, shielding, or sloping and benching, unless the excavation is made entirely in stable rock. A competent person must classify the soil and inspect the excavation. Protective systems for trenches deeper than 20 ft must be designed by a registered professional engineer, and trenches 4 ft and deeper also need a ladder or other means of egress within 25 ft of lateral travel.

Who designs and pays for shoring on a commercial project?+

It is almost always a means and methods item, so the contractor owns it. Simple hydraulic shores get selected from manufacturer tabulated data by the field; engineered systems like soldier piles or sheet piles are delegated design, stamped by an engineer hired through the shoring subcontractor. The cost sits in the sitework or utility bid, and on lump sum work it is invisible to the owner, which is exactly why estimators forget to carry it.
