Utility trench, explained.

A utility trench is the linear excavation that carries underground utilities: sanitary sewer, storm drain, water, gas, electrical duct bank, and communications. The scope lives on the civil utility plans and, critically, the profile sheets, where invert elevations against existing grade give the depth at every station. The geotech report flags rock and groundwater along the alignment. Site utility contractors own the wet utilities (water, sewer, storm); dry utilities are often installed by the serving utility companies or a separate contractor, a split worth confirming at bid time. A trench is an assembly, not just a dig: excavation, imported bedding under and around the pipe, the pipe itself, backfill in compacted lifts, and surface restoration. New estimators make predictable errors: they take off plan length and apply one depth when the profile shows the run falling from 4 ft to 11 ft, they compute backfill as equal to excavation instead of subtracting bedding and pipe volume, and they miss the pavement cut and patch where the alignment crosses a road. They also forget that anything 5 ft and deeper needs a protective system priced for the full length of the run.

How it is measured

Utility trench is measured in linear feet, broken out by pipe size and depth class (for example 0 to 5 ft, 5 to 8 ft, 8 to 12 ft), because each class carries a different cost per lf: more cy of excavation, slower production, mandatory trench protection past 5 ft, and possibly dewatering. The supporting volumes come from trench math: width x depth x length gives excavation in cf, divided by 27 for cy; bedding is its own volume from the trench detail; backfill is excavation minus bedding minus pipe volume. Width is set by pipe outside diameter plus working clearance, or by the trench detail on the civil sheets. Many municipal bid schedules pay sewer and water by the lf within depth ranges, which is exactly how the takeoff should be structured.

Width x depth x length, in feet, gives cubic feet; divide by 27 for cubic yards. Pull the depth from the profile sheets, not the plan view, and average it per segment or break the run into depth classes, since a sewer falling on grade can start at 4 ft and finish at 12 ft. What is pipe bedding and why is it a separate line item?+

Municipal bid schedules reflect this by paying pipe within depth ranges (0 to 6 ft, 6 to 8 ft, and so on), and a takeoff that ignores the breaks will misprice both ends of the run.
