What is conduit in construction?

Conduit in construction is the pipe or tubing that protects and routes electrical wiring between panels, junction boxes, and devices. The common commercial types are EMT (thin wall steel tubing), rigid metal conduit (RMC), intermediate metal conduit (IMC), and PVC, selected by exposure and location. Estimators take conduit off in linear feet by size and type, and the fittings, supports, and conductors all follow from that footage.

Conduit is the raceway family electricians install most: tubing run from a panelboard out to the loads it serves, pulled full of conductors after rough-in. On commercial projects it lives in the Division 26 specs and on the E-series power and lighting plans, but most branch circuit conduit is never drawn run by run. Designers show device locations and homerun arrows with circuit numbers, and the contractor chooses the routing, which means the estimator infers footage rather than measuring a drawn line. Feeders are the opposite: the one-line diagram and feeder schedule call out conduit size and conductor counts explicitly. The electrical subcontractor owns the scope. New estimators stumble in predictable places: taking off only the horizontal plan distance and missing the vertical drops to devices and the risers between floors, defaulting every run to 1/2 inch EMT when conductor fill pushes shared runs to 3/4 inch or larger, and missing spec-driven type changes, such as PVC below grade or rigid conduit where runs are exposed to physical damage, which carry very different labor.

How it is measured

Conduit is measured in linear feet (lf), broken out by trade size (1/2 in through 4 in and up) and by type (EMT, RMC, IMC, PVC). Fittings follow the footage: couplings at one per 10 ft stick, connectors at two per terminated run, and factory elbows where the bends exceed what the field can make. Supports follow code-mandated spacing, so strap and hanger counts also derive from the lf. Cost drivers are size, type, and labor conditions: exposed work at height, congested ceilings, and rigid conduit threading all push labor harder than the material delta. Quantities come from the power and lighting plans for branch work, and from the one-line diagram and feeder schedule for feeders, where size and fill are stated explicitly.

Worked example

A tenant fit-out power plan shows 12 branch circuit homeruns from panel LP-1, with scaled ceiling routes averaging 58 lf each. Add 7 ft of drop at the panel and 5 ft of drop at the first device on each run: 58 + 7 + 5 = 70 lf per homerun, and 12 x 70 = 840 lf of 3/4 in EMT. Sticks come in 10 ft lengths, so 840 / 10 = 84 sticks and roughly 84 couplings, plus 24 connectors (2 per run x 12 runs). Supports at 8 ft spacing give 840 / 8 = 105 straps. At an illustrative installed cost of $6.50 per lf for 3/4 in EMT with fittings and supports rolled in, the line extends to 840 x $6.50 = $5,460. The 144 lf of vertical (12 runs x 12 ft) is footage a plan-only measurement would have missed entirely.

What are the main types of conduit used in commercial construction?+

EMT (electrical metallic tubing) covers most interior dry locations because it is light and fast to install. Rigid metal conduit (RMC) is threaded heavy wall pipe used where runs need maximum physical protection, with IMC as a lighter intermediate option. PVC handles underground and corrosive locations, and flexible metal conduit or liquidtight makes the final connection to motors and vibrating equipment. The Division 26 raceway spec maps each type to its permitted locations.

How do you take off conduit when branch circuits are not drawn?+

Branch circuit plans show devices and homerun arrows, not routed lines, so the estimator measures a realistic ceiling path from the panel to each circuit, adds vertical drops at the panel and at the devices, and applies the result per homerun. Many estimators carry an average lf per circuit by building type and document it as an assumption. The key is writing the routing logic down so a reviewer can trace the footage.

What determines what size conduit a run needs?+

Conductor fill. The NEC limits the conductors in a conduit to 40 percent of its internal cross section when three or more are installed, so the count and gauge of the wires set the minimum trade size. Feeder conduit sizes are stated on the one-line diagram and feeder schedule, while branch run sizing is usually left to the contractor, which is exactly where takeoff assumptions about 1/2 in versus 3/4 in show up in the price.
