What is manholein construction?

A manhole in construction is a precast concrete access structure, typically 48 inches in diameter, set over a storm or sanitary line wherever pipes change size, direction, or grade, and at intervals that let crews enter the run for inspection and maintenance. Estimators count manholes each (ea) by depth class, because the rim to invert depth sets how many precast sections each structure needs. Manhole, explained.

A manhole is the vertical access point into a buried pipe network. On commercial sitework it shows up on the storm and sanitary utility plans and the plan-and-profile sheets, each structure carrying a tag (MH-1, MH-2), a rim elevation, and invert elevations for every pipe in and out, and the site utility contractor owns the scope under Division 33. Physically it is an assembly of precast components: a base section with the flow channel formed in it, barrel sections stacked to height, an eccentric cone or flat slab top, grade rings to fine tune the rim, and a cast iron frame and cover. Sanitary manholes add gasketed joints and pipe boots, and many jurisdictions require vacuum or exfiltration testing before acceptance. The classic new estimator mistake is carrying manholes at one flat unit price. A 14 ft deep manhole is not a 6 ft manhole with the same casting on top; it carries roughly twice the precast, far more excavation, and possibly shoring and dewatering. Depth class is the first sort, storm versus sanitary is the second.

Cost drivers beyond depth: storm versus sanitary service (gasketed joints, testing), diameter (48 in is typical, with 60 in and larger at junctions and big pipe), traffic rated frames and covers, and trench conditions flagged in the geotech report. Connecting pipe is taken off separately in lf, and drop connections, where a pipe enters well above the channel, carry their own adder.
