What is storm drainin construction?

A storm drain in construction is the buried gravity pipe network that carries rainwater runoff from inlets and catch basins to an outfall, detention pond, or municipal storm sewer. On commercial sites it is taken off in linear feet (lf) of pipe, broken out by diameter and material, with the structures between runs counted separately. The layout lives on the civil utility plan, and the depths live on the profile sheets.

Storm drain, explained.

A storm drain is the gravity piping that moves stormwater off the site, kept entirely separate from the sanitary sewer. On a commercial project it lives on the civil utility plan (C-sheets), with plan-and-profile sheets giving invert elevations, slopes, and pipe callouts such as 210 lf of 18 in reinforced concrete pipe (RCP) at 0.50 percent. Be careful with that abbreviation: on civil sheets RCP means reinforced concrete pipe, while on architectural and MEP sheets the same letters mean reflected ceiling plan. The scope usually belongs to the site utility contractor or the excavation sub under Division 33, and it picks up the building's roof drain leaders a few feet outside the foundation. New estimators make two recurring mistakes: taking off one total pipe length instead of breaking runs out by diameter, material, and depth, and reading lengths off the plan view without checking the profile, where a run that looks routine turns out to be 12 ft deep and needs a trench box. The geotech report matters too, because groundwater or rock in the trench zone changes the cost of every foot.

How it is measured

Storm drain pipe is measured in linear feet (lf), kept in separate line items for each combination of diameter and material (15 in reinforced concrete pipe, 18 in RCP, 24 in HDPE), because the installed unit price changes with every size. Most estimators measure horizontally from structure center to structure center off the utility plan and let the structure pricing absorb the overlap. Depth drives cost as much as diameter: deeper runs mean more trench excavation, imported bedding, backfill, and shoring or a trench box once the cut passes 5 ft, so estimators also tag each run with an average depth from the profile. Catch basins, manholes, inlets, and outfall structures are counted each (ea) and priced separately, as are flared end sections and riprap aprons at the outfall.

What is the difference between a storm drain and a sanitary sewer?+

A storm drain carries rainwater runoff from pavement and roofs to an outfall, pond, or municipal storm system, while a sanitary sewer carries wastewater to treatment. On US commercial sites they are separate piping systems with separate permits, and sanitary lines typically carry tighter joint, bedding, and testing requirements. Estimators keep them as separate scopes and separate line items even when the same utility sub digs both trenches.

What does RCP mean on civil drawings?+

On civil utility sheets, RCP means reinforced concrete pipe, the standard material for storm drains under traffic and at larger diameters. The same abbreviation means reflected ceiling plan on architectural and MEP sheets, which trips up estimators moving between disciplines in the same drawing set. Context resolves it: if the callout sits on a pipe run with a diameter and slope, it is reinforced concrete pipe.

Why is storm drain pipe priced by depth as well as size?+

Because the pipe itself is only part of the installed cost. A deeper run means more trench excavation, more imported bedding and backfill, slower production, and protective systems once the trench passes 5 ft, which is where OSHA requires a trench box, shoring, or sloped banks. Two runs of identical 18 in pipe can carry very different unit prices if one averages 4 ft deep and the other averages 10 ft.
