Catch basin, explained.

A catch basin is the workhorse inlet of site storm drainage: runoff sheets across pavement to a grate, drops into the structure, and exits through an outlet pipe set above a sump that traps sediment and debris. On the documents it lives on the civil utility plan and grading plan, each structure tagged with a rim elevation and invert elevations, backed by a detail or a structure schedule on the C-sheets, and the site utility sub typically owns the scope. A catch basin is an assembly of components: a precast base section, riser sections to reach grade, grade rings for final adjustment, and a cast iron frame and grate, with traffic rated frames specified in drive lanes. The mistake new estimators make is counting basins as identical units. A basin with 9 ft from rim to invert carries far more excavation, precast, and backfill than a 4 ft one, and a curb inlet frame is a different casting than a flat grate. Group the count by depth class and frame type before pricing, the same way the precast supplier will quote it.

How it is measured

Catch basins are counted each (ea), but the count only prices correctly when it is grouped by depth class, typically in 2 ft steps such as 0 to 6 ft, 6 to 8 ft, and 8 to 10 ft. Depth is rim elevation minus the lowest invert elevation, both printed on the utility plan or structure schedule, plus the sump depth from the detail. Vertical feet drive cost because every added foot means another precast riser section, more trench excavation, and more backfill. The frame and grate is a separate component spec (flat grate, curb inlet, traffic rated), and the connecting pipe is never included in the structure price; it is taken off separately in lf.

What are catch basins used for?

Catch basins sit at the low points of a paved or graded surface and take stormwater off it. Runoff sheets across the pavement to a grate or curb inlet, drops into the structure, and leaves through an outlet pipe into the storm drain line.

The reason the outlet sits above the floor is the sump. That dead space below the outlet invert holds the water permanently, so heavier sediment and grit settle out instead of travelling into the pipe network, and a hooded outlet keeps floating trash and oil from following the water downstream.

On a site plan that gives catch basins two jobs at once: they are the drainage system's collection points, and they are its first sediment trap. Both are why a basin is a structure with depth rather than a hole with a lid, and why the vertical feet below the pipe get paid for.

State stormwater design guidance describes them the same way, as storm drain inlets with a grate or curb inlet and a sump that captures trash, debris, sediment, and oil and grease (CT Stormwater Quality Manual).

What is on a catch basin detail?

The detail is the drawing that tells you what the structure actually costs. Expect a rim elevation at the top of the frame, an invert elevation for every pipe entering and leaving, the sump depth carried below the lowest invert, the frame and grate callout, and the size of each connecting pipe.

Read it alongside the structure schedule on the civil sheets rather than instead of it. The schedule gives you rim and inverts per structure so you can compute depth; the detail gives you the sump dimension and the casting spec that the schedule usually leaves out.

Do catch basins need cleaning?+

Yes, because the sump only keeps working while there is room left in it. Sediment, grit, and trash accumulate in the dead space below the outlet invert, and once the sump fills, solids start passing straight through to the storm line. How well a basin performs over time depends on the size of the sump, whether the outlet is hooded, and how often it is cleaned out, so periodic cleanout is a maintenance line item rather than an optional one. Cleaning is an owner or facilities cost after turnover, not part of the installed structure price a takeoff carries.
