What is stiffener in construction?
A stiffener is a steel plate welded to a beam or girder web, or between the flanges, to keep the web from buckling or crippling under load. Bearing stiffeners go at reaction points and under concentrated loads, intermediate stiffeners stabilize deep plate girder webs, and continuity plates do the same job inside moment connections. Estimators count them each from the framing details and price them through plate weight plus fabrication labor.

The structural engineer calls them out three ways: bearing stiffeners under concentrated loads and at reaction points, intermediate stiffeners spaced along deep plate girder webs to stop shear buckling, and continuity plates across column webs at moment connections. The fabricator details every plate on the shop drawings, fits and welds them in the shop, and the erector only touches them again if a detail calls for a field weld. The steel sub's estimator owns the count; the GC's estimator mostly checks that the fabricator's tonnage and labor look sane. The predictable mistakes: counting locations instead of plates when stiffeners come in pairs on both sides of the web, skipping continuity plates because they live on a typical moment connection detail referenced from a schedule, and pricing them by weight alone when fit-up and welding labor is most of the cost.
Stiffeners are taken off each (ea), then converted to weight in pounds for the material side. Counts come from the steel framing details, girder elevations, and the connection or moment frame schedules; a typical detail flagged on twenty beams means twenty sets of plates, so trace every callout. Convert each plate to square feet and apply the standard plate weight, 40.8 lb per sf for every inch of thickness, to get pounds, which rolls up into the project steel tonnage. Pricing carries two lines: plate material by weight and shop fabrication labor by the each, usually a fraction of an hour to fit and weld each plate. Most estimators round the weight up and let the per-each labor line carry the real cost.
Worked example
A 40 ft plate girder with a 48 in deep web calls for intermediate stiffener pairs at 5 ft on center and a bearing stiffener pair at each end. Step 1, count: interior locations at 5 ft spacing give 7 spots x 2 plates = 14 plates, plus 2 ends x 2 plates = 4 bearing plates, so 14 + 4 = 18 plates. Step 2, size: each plate is 1/2 in x 6 in x 45 in, so 6 x 45 = 270 sq in, and 270 / 144 = 1.875 sf. Step 3, weight: 1 in plate weighs 40.8 lb per sf, so 1/2 in weighs 20.4, and 1.875 sf x 20.4 = 38.25 lb per plate. Step 4, total: 18 x 38.25 lb = 688.5 lb, carried as 689 lb. Step 5, price it: material at an illustrative $0.85 per lb is 689 x $0.85 = $585.65; shop labor at 0.5 hours per plate is 18 x 0.5 = 9 hours x an illustrative $95 = $855. Labor outweighs material, which is typical for stiffeners.

What is the difference between a bearing stiffener and an intermediate stiffener?+
A bearing stiffener sits at a reaction point or under a concentrated load and is fitted tight to the loaded flange so it carries force directly into the web; it works like a short column inside the girder. An intermediate stiffener is spaced along a deep plate girder web purely to stop shear buckling, so it can be smaller, sometimes single-sided, and does not need a fitted bearing end. They look similar in elevation, which is why the takeoff has to read the detail, not just count vertical plates.
Are continuity plates at moment connections counted as stiffeners?+
Yes. Continuity plates are horizontal stiffeners welded between the column flanges in line with the beam flanges, and they get counted each from the moment connection details exactly like web stiffeners. Watch for web doubler plates in the same detail; those are a separate item with different welding requirements and should not be lumped into the stiffener count.
Why do stiffeners cost so much per pound compared to the main steel?+
The plates are small, so the weight is trivial, but each one has to be cut, fitted against the web and flanges, and welded on multiple sides, often with tight fit-up tolerances at bearing locations. That shop labor runs far past the material value, which is why estimators carry stiffeners with a per-each labor line instead of burying them in the per-ton rate. A girder with a heavy stiffener layout can carry more fabrication hours than a plain beam twice its weight.
