The definition

Sidewalk, explained.

Sidewalk is the pedestrian piece of the paving assembly, shown on the civil site plan with widths and limits and detailed on the site details sheet. A common commercial section is 4 inches of concrete on compacted aggregate base, thickened to 6 inches where vehicles cross at drive aprons and loading paths. Reinforcement is welded wire mesh or fiber per the detail, with tooled control joints spaced roughly equal to the walk width and expansion joint material against curbs, buildings, and at regular intervals. ADA work rides with it: curb ramps are governed by accessibility requirements, including a maximum running slope of 1:12, and each ramp carries detectable warning surfaces and tight tolerances. Cost drivers are thickness, base preparation, mesh versus fiber reinforcement, the broom finish, joint counts, and how much edge forming the layout requires, since a narrow winding walk has far more form lf per sf than a wide straight one. Check the civil and landscape sheets against each other; walks frequently show on both, and only one set governs.
