Dewatering, explained.

Dewatering is the controlled removal of groundwater or stormwater from an excavation so the work happens in the dry: footings need dry, stable subgrade, and saturated trench walls fail. The warning signs live in the geotech report, where boring logs record the groundwater elevation; if planned subgrade on the civil or structural sheets sits below that elevation, the job dewaters. The specs cover it in the Division 31 earthwork sections, usually as a contractor-designed performance item. Light inflow gets handled with sumps, a pit and a pump moving water out as it collects. High water tables in permeable soils need a wellpoint system, a header pipe and vacuum pump pulling water from dozens of small wells to lower the water table before the cut is opened. The scope sits with the excavation contractor for sump work and a specialty dewatering sub for engineered systems. A sump collects water that has already entered the excavation in a low pit and pumps it out, which works for rain, perched water, and minor seepage. A wellpoint system lowers the water table before the water reaches the cut: dozens of small wells around the excavation connect to a header pipe and vacuum pump and pull the groundwater down. Permeable soil with a high water table generally needs wellpoints; sumps alone just chase the inflow.
