What is stud in construction?

A stud is a vertical framing member in a wall that carries load from the plates above down to the floor or foundation. In US light-frame work studs are most often 2x4 or 2x6, set at 16 in or 24 in on center, and cut or bought as precuts to suit the wall height.

Studs are the repetitive vertical members that make up a wall's frame. In residential and light commercial light-frame work they are typically 2x4 (actual 1.5 in by 3.5 in) for interior and standard bearing walls, or 2x6 (1.5 in by 5.5 in) where deeper cavities or higher loads call for it. Spacing is almost always 16 in on center (OC), with 24 in OC used in some single-story and advanced-framing layouts. Beyond the field studs at spacing, a wall also needs king studs and jack studs at openings, cripple studs above and below openings, and extra studs at corners and partition intersections for backing. Wall height drives stud length: framers buy precut studs sized so the stud plus the plate stack lands on the target ceiling height. A precut for an 8 ft wall is 92-5/8 in, which with a single bottom plate and a double top plate (3 plates at 1.5 in each, 4.5 in total) yields 96 in, or 8 ft, finished rough height.

How it is measured

Count studs off the framing plan and wall elevations. Take the wall length in linear feet, multiply by 12 to get inches, divide by the OC spacing, then add one for the starting end stud: lf x 12 / spacing + 1. On top of the field count, add corner studs (commonly 2 to 3 extra per corner depending on the corner detail), partition backing studs where interior walls tie in, and the king, jack, and cripple studs at every opening read off the door and window schedule. Stud length comes from the wall height callout on the section or elevation, matched to a standard precut. Studs are reported as a piece count by size and length.

Worked example

Take a 40 lf exterior wall framed 2x4 at 16 in OC. Field studs: 40 ft x 12 = 480 in, divided by 16 = 30 spaces, plus 1 end stud = 31 studs. Add backing and corners: two outside corners at 3 studs of added backing = 6, plus one interior partition intersection needing 1 extra backing stud, totaling about 6 added studs here, bringing the wall to roughly 37 studs (the small remainder also covers a layout adjustment at a door king and jack pair). At an illustrative price of $9.50 per 2x4x92-5/8 precut, US market: 37 studs x $9.50 = $351.50 for the wall's stud material, before plates, headers, and waste allowance.

How do I count studs in a wall fast?+

Use wall length in feet times 12, divided by your OC spacing, plus one for the end stud. Then add corner backing, partition backing, and the king, jack, and cripple studs at each opening. That covers field plus extras.

What is a stud precut and why not just buy 8 ft studs?+

A precut is sized so the stud plus the plate stack hits the target wall height. A 92-5/8 in precut with a single bottom and double top plate gives a 96 in (8 ft) rough wall. A full 96 in stud would push the wall over height once plates are added.

When do I use 16 in versus 24 in on center?+

16 in OC is the default for most bearing and exterior walls and gives more nailing and stiffness. 24 in OC, common in advanced framing, cuts lumber but requires the loads, sheathing, and stacked framing to support the wider spacing. Confirm against the structural plan.
