What is furring in construction?

Furring is the practice of fastening thin strips of wood or metal, called furring strips, to a wall, ceiling, or structural surface to create a level, spaced framing plane for finishes. Furring gives drywall, paneling, or cladding something to attach to while leaving an air gap, correcting an uneven surface, or holding insulation. The strips are typically 1x2 or 1x3 wood or hat-channel metal run at 16 in or 24 in on center.

Furring strips create a secondary framing layer over an existing wall, masonry surface, or structural deck so finishes can be fastened plane and true. On a concrete or block wall, furring holds the gap that keeps drywall off the cold, damp masonry and gives room for a vapor barrier or rigid insulation. On a stud wall that has bowed or on rafters that are not coplanar, furring shims the surface back to flat. Wood furring is usually 1x2 or 1x3 nominal stock, while metal furring takes the form of hat channel or resilient channel, the latter chosen when sound isolation matters. Spacing follows the finish material: 16 in on center is standard for half-inch gypsum board, while wider spacing may suit thicker panels. Furring runs perpendicular to the joists or studs it crosses so each strip is fastened at every framing member. The estimator distinguishes furring from sleepers, which serve the same leveling role but lie flat on a floor slab to receive subfloor or finish flooring.

How it is measured

Furring is taken off in linear feet of strip. On the drawings, read the wall sections and reflected ceiling plans, which note the furring material, size, and on-center spacing. For a wall, divide the wall length by the spacing to get the number of vertical or horizontal runs, then multiply by run length. Add strips at openings, top, and bottom where edges need backing. Convert the total linear feet to board feet for wood pricing, or to pieces of standard length for ordering. Fasteners and any shims behind the strips are counted as a separate line.

Worked example

Furr a 12 ft long by 9 ft tall masonry wall with 1x3 wood strips run vertically at 16 in on center. Twelve feet is 144 in, so 144 / 16 = 9 spaces, which means 9 + 1 = 10 vertical strips. Each strip is 9 ft tall, so 10 x 9 ft = 90 lf for the verticals. Add a horizontal strip top and bottom for edge backing: 2 x 12 ft = 24 lf. Total furring is 90 + 24 = 114 lf of 1x3. Ordering in 8 ft sticks, 114 / 8 = 14.25, rounded up to 15 sticks. At an illustrative US cost of $0.55 per linear foot, 114 lf x $0.55 = $62.70 in material. The estimator carries fasteners and any shim stock as a separate line item.

What is the difference between furring and a sleeper?+

Both level a surface for finishes, but furring is fastened to a wall or ceiling, while a sleeper lies flat on a floor slab to carry subfloor or finish flooring. Furring is usually 1x stock; sleepers are commonly 2x4.

How far apart should furring strips be spaced?+

Follow the finish material. Half-inch gypsum board is typically backed at 16 in on center; some thicker panels and sidings allow 24 in. Always confirm spacing against the manufacturer's fastening schedule and the wall section.

When do you use metal furring instead of wood?+

Use metal hat channel over masonry where moisture or fire concerns rule out wood, and resilient channel where the assembly needs sound isolation. Wood furring is fine for typical dry interior walls and is usually cheaper per linear foot.
