What is fire blocking in construction?
Fire blocking is solid material installed inside concealed framing cavities to cut off the vertical and horizontal pathways that let fire and hot gases spread through a building. In light-frame work it is typically a 2x stud-width block of dimensional lumber, though mineral wool, fire-rated foam, or other approved materials also qualify. Code dictates where it goes; the estimator counts the linear feet and penetrations.

Book a walkthroughFire blocking is a passive fire-protection measure required by the IRC and IBC at specific concealed locations where framing cavities would otherwise act as chimneys. The goal is simple: keep a fire in one cavity from racing into the next. Common required locations include the top and bottom of stud walls where they connect to floors and ceilings, at vertical-to-horizontal transitions such as soffits and dropped ceilings, in concealed spaces of stud walls at ceiling and floor levels, at openings around vents, pipes, ducts, chimneys, and wires at floor and ceiling lines, and in furred spaces. The IRC also requires fire blocking in stud walls at intervals not exceeding 10 ft along the wall when the cavity is unusually tall or continuous. Acceptable materials are spelled out in code: nominal 2 in lumber, two layers of 1 in lumber, gypsum board, mineral wool, cementitious material, or listed fire-rated sealants and foams for penetrations. Fire blocking is not the same as draftstopping, which addresses concealed floor and attic spaces in larger assemblies. The estimator distinguishes the two and prices each separately.
Fire blocking is taken off in linear feet of 2x stock for cavity blocking, and in count of penetrations for foam or sealant. On the drawings, read the wall sections and the architectural fire-protection notes, which call out the required locations and the approved material. Walk the floor plans for plumbing chases, mechanical shafts, and dropped soffits, then check the framing elevations for any stud walls tall enough to trigger the 10 ft horizontal interval rule. Count each pipe, duct, and wire bundle crossing a top or bottom plate as one penetration. Convert blocking length to board feet for pricing and round penetration counts up to the next full can or tube of listed sealant.
Worked example
Take a single-story unit with 180 lf of interior partition that runs full height to the underside of the floor framing above, requiring fire blocking at the top of the wall. That is 180 lf of 2x4 fire block. A 2x4 is 0.667 board feet per linear foot, so 180 lf x 0.667 = 120 board feet. At an illustrative US material cost of $0.85 per board foot, that is 120 x $0.85 = $102 in lumber. Now the penetrations: the plumber and electrician cross the plates at 14 points. Listed fire-rated foam covers roughly 6 penetrations per can, so 14 / 6 = 2.33 cans, rounded up to 3 cans. At an illustrative $9 per can, that is 3 x $9 = $27. Total fire-blocking material on this run is $102 + $27 = $129, before labor. Labor is carried separately as the framer installs blocks during wall framing.

Is fire blocking the same as draftstopping?+
No. Fire blocking closes small concealed cavities like stud walls and soffits and uses materials such as 2x lumber or listed foam. Draftstopping divides large concealed floor and attic spaces and is usually gypsum board or structural panel. Code treats them as separate requirements, so price them separately.
Where is fire blocking most commonly required in light-frame walls?+
At the top and bottom of stud walls where they meet floor and ceiling assemblies, at vertical-to-horizontal soffit and dropped-ceiling transitions, around pipe, duct, and wire penetrations at plate lines, and in tall continuous cavities at intervals not exceeding 10 ft horizontally.
Can spray foam count as fire blocking?+
Only listed fire-blocking foams that carry the proper approval count, and typically only at penetrations and small gaps. Standard window-and-door foam does not qualify. Always confirm the product listing against the architect's fire-protection notes before pricing it in.
