What is subfloor in construction?
Subfloor is the structural sheathing layer, usually tongue-and-groove plywood or OSB panels, fastened across the floor joists to form the walking surface and the base for finish flooring. It spans joist to joist and ties the floor frame into a stiff diaphragm. Quantity is the floor area in square feet converted to 4x8 sheets plus waste.

Tongue-and-groove plywood or OSB panels, commonly 3/4 in nominal (23/32 in actual) for joists at 16 in or 24 in on center, are laid perpendicular to the joists with end joints staggered and glued and nailed or screwed to the framing. The subfloor carries live and dead loads to the joists, braces the joists against rollover, and forms the floor diaphragm that transfers lateral load to the walls. Construction adhesive in the joist line plus a tight T and G edge keeps the floor quiet and squeak-free. It is the base for underlayment or finish flooring above. Estimators take subfloor off by floor square footage, then convert to 4x8 sheets, since each panel covers 32 sf. Glue and fasteners ride along with the sheet count.
Subfloor is measured in square feet of floor area from the floor plan, then converted to 4x8 sheets at 32 sf each. Take the gross floor area inside the rim, subtract large openings like stairwells if you want net, then divide by 32 and round up. Add 5 to 10 percent waste for cuts, T and G trim, and breakage. The plan shows the sheathing thickness and the joist spacing in the floor framing notes, which together set the panel rating you buy. Worked example
Take a 1,120 sf floor decked with 3/4 in T and G subfloor. Each 4x8 sheet covers 4 x 8 = 32 sf. Base count = 1,120 / 32 = 35 sheets exact. Add 7 percent waste for cuts and T and G trim: 35 x 1.07 = 37.45, round up to 38 sheets. Glue: at about 2 to 3 sheets per tube, 38 / 3 = 12.7 and 38 / 2 = 19, so order 13 to 19 tubes of subfloor adhesive. Fasteners: at roughly 50 to 60 screws per sheet for a 6 in edge and 12 in field pattern, 38 x 50 = 1,900 and 38 x 60 = 2,280, so plan on about 1,900 to 2,280 screws, call it a 2,500-count box with margin. So 1,120 sf decks out to 38 sheets, around 13 to 19 tubes of glue, and a 2,500 box of screws.
