What is riprapin construction?

Riprap in construction is a protective layer of large, durable, angular stone placed on slopes, channel banks, culvert outfalls, and shorelines to keep flowing water from eroding the soil underneath. It is sized by class or gradation and almost always placed over a geotextile filter fabric or granular filter layer. Estimators measure it in tons or cubic yards by class, computed as the protected area times the specified blanket thickness.

The definition

Riprap, explained.

Riprap shows up on the civil grading and drainage sheets, most often at culvert and storm drain outfalls, channel transitions, pond slopes, and steep banks, with the class, thickness, and filter requirement in a detail or the Division 31 specs. Classes are gradations: each state DOT and many municipalities define their own class names and size ranges, so the same word can mean very different stone in different jurisdictions, and the estimator has to price the class actually specified. The sitework or grading contractor typically places it with an excavator, and access drives the labor cost more than the stone does. New estimators get burned three ways: measuring the protection area flat off the plan instead of along the slope (a 2:1 slope adds about 12 percent to the surface area), missing the filter fabric under the stone because it lives only in the detail, and converting tons to cubic yards with solid rock density instead of the placed, voided unit weight.

How it is measured

Riprap is measured in tons or cubic yards by class. Volume is the measured surface area along the slope times the specified blanket thickness, converted at 27 cf per cy. Tonnage multiplies that volume by a placed unit weight, which includes the voids between stones and is therefore well below solid rock density; the spec, the geotech, or the quarry supplies the number used. Cost drivers are the class (bigger stone hauls and places slower), haul distance from the quarry, placement access (machine placement from the top of slope versus hand work), and whether the spec adds grouted riprap, which is a separate, costlier item. The filter fabric beneath is its own sy line.

Is riprap measured in tons or cubic yards?+

Both appear on drawings and bid forms, and quarries sell by the ton, so estimators routinely convert between them. The conversion uses placed unit weight, which includes the voids between stones and is meaningfully lower than solid rock density; an illustrative working figure is on the order of 1.3 to 1.5 tons per cy depending on the stone and gradation. Whatever number you use, state it on the takeoff so the conversion is auditable.

Why does riprap need filter fabric underneath?+

Without a filter layer, flowing water moves through the voids between stones and washes the underlying soil out from beneath the blanket, a failure mode called piping. The stone then settles, the protection unravels from the bottom, and the outfall scours anyway. A nonwoven geotextile filter fabric (or a granular filter layer) holds the soil in place while letting water pass, which is why nearly every riprap detail shows fabric and why the takeoff should always carry it.

What do riprap classes mean?+

A class is a specified gradation, a range of allowable stone sizes usually described by weight or dimension around a median stone size. The catch is that class names are not national: each state DOT defines its own, so the same class number means different stone in different states. Price the gradation in the project spec, confirm your quarry can produce it, and remember that larger classes cost more to haul and place per ton.
