What is smoke damper in construction?
A smoke damper in construction is a life-safety device mounted in ductwork where it penetrates a smoke barrier, driven closed by an actuator on a signal from a duct detector or the fire alarm system so smoke cannot travel through the duct. Estimators count smoke dampers each (ea), and every one drags an actuator, an access door, and often a duct smoke detector along with it. Many rated wall locations use combination fire/smoke dampers that respond to both heat and smoke.

The mechanical plans show damper symbols where ducts cross rated construction, but the authoritative source for where smoke barriers actually run is the architectural life-safety plan, and a mechanical-only count routinely misses crossings. The damper itself is Division 23 scope, furnished and installed by the mechanical contractor, usually with a factory mounted actuator; the power wiring and fire alarm connection typically belong to the electrical and fire alarm contractors, a three-way scope joint where gaps hide. Smoke dampers carry a UL 555S listing, fire dampers carry UL 555, and combination fire/smoke dampers carry both. The pricing mistake new estimators make is treating them all alike: a curtain style fire damper is a cheap passive device with a fusible link, while a smoke damper is a motorized assembly that needs an actuator, a detector to trigger it, an access door to service it, and commissioning to prove it closes.
Smoke dampers are counted each (ea), broken out by type (smoke only versus combination fire/smoke), by duct size, and by actuator voltage, because all three change the price. Each count line drags companion quantities: one access door per damper, a duct smoke detector where the control sequence requires one, and a test and commissioning allowance per device. The counts come from the mechanical duct plans, cross checked against the architectural life-safety plan that shows the smoke barriers and rated shafts, and against the damper schedule when the engineer provides one. Worked example
Count a single floor of a medical office building. The shaft wall takes 6 combination fire/smoke dampers and the two smoke barrier corridors take 8 smoke dampers, so 14 devices total. Every device needs an access door, and the sequence calls for duct detectors at 8 of the locations. At illustrative installed prices: 6 combo fire/smoke dampers x $950 = $5,700, 8 smoke dampers x $700 = $5,600, 14 access doors x $85 = $1,190, and 8 duct detectors furnished and wired x $400 = $3,200. That subtotals $5,700 + $5,600 + $1,190 + $3,200 = $15,690. Add functional testing at 0.5 hour per damper: 14 x 0.5 = 7 hours at an illustrative $95 per hour = $665. The floor carries $15,690 + $665 = $16,355, and the dampers themselves are only about two thirds of it.

What is the difference between a fire damper and a smoke damper?+
A fire damper is a passive device, listed to UL 555, that slams shut when a fusible link melts at its rated temperature to keep fire from passing through a rated wall or floor. A smoke damper, listed to UL 555S, closes on an electrical signal from a duct detector or the fire alarm system, which means it needs an actuator and wiring. Combination fire/smoke dampers do both jobs in one housing and cost accordingly.
Where are smoke dampers required in a building?+
Generally where ducts penetrate smoke barriers and smoke partitions, with the exact requirements and exceptions set by the building code and the project's life-safety design. The mechanical engineer places the symbols, but the smoke barrier locations live on the architectural life-safety plan, so a careful estimator counts from both.
