What is glazing in construction?
Glazing is the glass infill in windows, storefront, and curtain wall, most often supplied as insulated glass units (IGUs) of two or three lites separated by a sealed air or argon space. In commercial work it is measured in square feet by opening off the window schedule. The estimator separates glazing from the framing that holds it.

In US commercial construction it is usually an insulated glass unit (IGU): two lites of glass (often one tempered or laminated, with a low-e coating) bonded to a spacer and edge seal, sometimes with argon fill. The glazing line on an estimate is driven by total glass square footage, unit type, and performance (low-e, tinted, spandrel, safety glazing at doors and sidelites). Estimators take glazing by opening because each window type carries different glass makeup and size, and because safety glazing requirements at hazardous locations change the unit cost. Glazing is priced separately from the framing system (storefront, curtain wall, punched windows) since glass and frame have different suppliers, lead times, and unit rates. Spandrel and vision glass are split out, as are any oversized or insulated-laminated units that drive premium pricing.
Measured in square feet of glass by opening, taken off the window schedule and exterior elevations. For each window mark, read width times height from the schedule, multiply by quantity, and sum the area; the schedule also gives the IGU count, glass type, and any safety glazing notes. Tally IGUs by type so each performance and size group prices on its own line. Confirm tempered or laminated requirements at doors, sidelites, and hazardous locations against the schedule notes and the code references on the drawings. Vision and spandrel glass are tallied separately. Net out frame face so glass area reflects daylight opening where the schedule calls for it.
Worked example
From the window schedule, Type A is 12 units at 5 ft by 4 ft = 20 sf each, totaling 12 x 20 = 240 sf. Type B is 8 units at 6 ft by 5 ft = 30 sf each, totaling 8 x 30 = 240 sf. Type C is 4 units at 4 ft by 3 ft = 12 sf each, totaling 4 x 12 = 48 sf. Add them: 240 + 240 + 48 = 528 sf of glazing across 12 + 8 + 4 = 24 insulated glass units. At an illustrative 42 dollars/sf for a standard low-e IGU, the glass line is 528 sf x 42 dollars = 22,176 dollars. Any units flagged for tempered or laminated safety glazing in the schedule notes are pulled to a separate higher-rate line rather than averaged into the 42 dollar rate.
