What is fascia in construction?
Fascia is the vertical (or near-vertical) trim board that caps the outer edge of a roof at the eave and rake, closing off the ends of the rafters or trusses. In estimating it is a linear-foot run measured around the roof edge, including the added length at each outside corner. It pairs with the soffit to finish the overhang.

Book a walkthroughFascia is the finish board or metal trim that runs along the outer edge of a roof, fastened to the rafter tails, truss ends, or a sub-fascia, and it forms the face that the gutter mounts to and the soffit tucks under. On commercial work fascia may be prefinished metal, composite, or wood, and it appears at both the eave (horizontal) and, where the design calls for it, the rake (sloped) edges. The estimator takes fascia off in linear feet along the roof edge. The controlling subtlety is corners: at each outside corner the fascia wraps and the two runs miter, so corner conditions add a small allowance per corner and require a corner trim piece. Fascia height (the board depth) sets the material width but not the run length. Because fascia, gutter, and soffit all follow the same roof edge, they take their length from the same perimeter, but fascia may exceed the gutter length when it continues onto rake edges that carry no gutter. The estimator confirms which edges receive fascia from the eave and rake details.
Fascia is measured in linear feet along the roof edge, taken from the roof plan perimeter and confirmed against the eave and rake detail sections. Trace the full edge that receives fascia, including both eave and rake runs where the detail shows fascia continuing up the gable. Add an allowance at each outside corner for the wrap and miter, and count corner trim pieces per each. Read the fascia depth from the detail to set material width and gutter mounting, but length comes from the perimeter. Keep fascia length separate from gutter length, since gutter follows only the eave while fascia may also run the rakes.
Worked example
Take a roof on a 60 ft by 40 ft footprint with fascia on all four edges. The base perimeter run is (60 + 40) x 2 = 200 lf. There are 4 outside corners; at each corner you allow 0.5 lf for the wrap and miter, so 4 x 0.5 = 2 lf of corner allowance, giving 200 + 2 = 202 lf of fascia. You also count 4 corner trim pieces, one per corner. If the eave-only gutter follows just the two 60 ft eaves on a gable layout, gutter is 60 + 60 = 120 lf while fascia is the full 202 lf, because the fascia continues up the two rake edges that carry no gutter. So the estimator prices 202 lf of fascia and 4 corner pieces (illustrative, US market), and does not assume gutter and fascia share the same length.
