What is OSB (oriented strand board) in construction?
OSB (oriented strand board) is an engineered wood panel made from compressed wood strands bonded with resin, used as structural sheathing for walls, roofs, and subfloors in light-frame construction. It performs the same structural job as plywood at a lower cost, which is why it dominates wall and roof sheathing on most US framing jobs.

Book a walkthroughOSB is a structural panel built from rectangular wood strands laid in cross-oriented layers and pressed with waterproof adhesive under heat. In framing it shows up as wall sheathing, roof sheathing, and subfloor. Standard panel size is 4 ft by 8 ft, and the common thicknesses are 7/16 in for walls, 1/2 in and 5/8 in for roofs depending on rafter or truss spacing, and 23/32 in or 3/4 in tongue-and-groove for subfloor. OSB carries an APA span rating stamp (for example 24/16) that tells you the maximum roof support spacing and floor support spacing. It holds nails and screws well and resists racking when nailed off on a proper schedule. The trade-off versus plywood is edge swelling when OSB stays wet, so detailing, flashing, and dry-in timing matter. For takeoff, OSB is counted in full sheets, then converted to a square-foot coverage figure for waste and ordering.
OSB is measured off the elevations and roof plan as gross wall or roof area in square feet, then divided by 32 sf per 4 ft by 8 ft sheet. Read the wall schedule and roof framing notes for the called-out thickness and span rating, since that drives unit cost. On the floor plan, subfloor OSB is taken from the conditioned floor area. Deduct large openings only when they exceed roughly 25 sf, and add a waste factor, commonly 10 percent for walls and 12 to 15 percent for cut-up roofs. Panels are ordered in whole sheets, so always round up. Note edge support requirements (blocking or H-clips) from the framing notes, since they affect the blocking and labor counts, not the panel count itself.
Worked example
A crew is sheathing 1,800 sf of exterior wall with 7/16 in OSB. One 4 ft by 8 ft sheet covers 4 x 8 = 32 sf. Base sheet count is 1,800 sf / 32 sf = 56.25 sheets. Apply a 10 percent waste factor for cuts around windows and corners: 56.25 x 1.10 = 61.875 sheets, rounded up to 62 sheets. At an illustrative US material price of $18 per sheet, panel cost is 62 x $18 = $1,116. If you instead specified 1/2 in OSB at an illustrative $22 per sheet, the same 62 sheets would run 62 x $22 = $1,364, a $248 difference driven only by thickness. Is OSB as strong as plywood for sheathing?+
For racking and span performance at the same APA rating, yes, OSB and plywood are structurally interchangeable and code recognizes both. The practical difference is moisture: OSB swells more at cut edges if it stays wet, so plywood is sometimes preferred where extended exposure is likely.
